Information on the American Hardwoods We Use

RED OAK

Red Oak is a very sturdy, very hard wood. It is open-grained, (which we close by sealing) which makes it feel slightly less smooth to the touch than the other hardwoods we use. It is a medium shaded wood ranging from light brown to blushing pink. It is really beautiful.

WILD CHERRY

Wild Cherry is a tough, smooth, tight grained hardwood. Cherry starts out as a pink wood and deepens in color in response to light exposure and time. Ultimately, a cherry piece will become a beautiful burgundy red.

Below is an example of this change in color:

ROCK MAPLE

Rock Maple is the hardest of the hardwoods (just slightly harder than oak). It is very light in color ranging from white to a light honey shade. It has a tightly closed, straight grain pattern. It is the traditional wood used in butcher blocks.

BIRD'S-EYE-MAPLE

is the same wood as rock maple, only it has little swirls or dots in the grain that resemble little eyes. It is very fancy and luxurious looking and it is more expensive than the other woods used in the chopping block construction.

BLACK WALNUT

Black Walnut is a beautiful hardwood that ranges in color from chocolate brown to nearly black. It is a very strong wood and prized by many people.

MESQUITE

Mesquite is a very stable wood. It is medium reddish brown and gold with a swirling smooth to coarse grain that makes it a beautiful medium to work with. Mesquite does not grow in abundance like pine or other general building woods. It grows naturally in the South and West areas of North America and in parts of South America. Mesquite is growing in demand as builders of fine homes and furniture are discovering its finished beauty and durability. Since the use of mesquite is becoming dramatically more popular, the supply of the wood is limited, especially the finer quality wood, thus the additional cost of our Mesquite products.
